CBC on Mothers Day: informs you what moms would be paid if they were paid for their “work”

Fri, 09 May 2008 12:51:46 PDT
Let’s self-loathe. Begin now. CBC informed Canadians just now on national television (state-owned CBC Newsworld, channel 390 on my dial) that in celebration of the upcoming Mother’s Day on Sunday, we ought to look at what moms would get paid if only they were paid their due for what they apparently agree is their unpaid labors. (Ostensibly this would be paid by the state, I guess, since who else would pay mothers? What’s Layton’s position on this? Maybe we’ll find out on the CBC’s “Politi

Recollections of Rorty

Wed, 14 May 2008 15:50:26 PDT
Via Crooked Timber, Raymond Geuss remembers Richard Rorty, in Arion: When I arrived in Princeton during the 1970s my addiction to tea was already long-standing and very well entrenched, but I was so concerned about the quality of the water in town that I used to buy large containers of allegedly “pure” water at Davidson's—the local supermarket, which seems now to have gone out of business. I didn't, of course, have a car, and given the amount of tea I consumed, the transport of adequate supp

Scrubs New Chief: Jen Garner or John Cusack?

Wed, 14 May 2008 15:51:38 PDT
I can't choose coz I like Jen Garner, I think she makes a great comedian. And John Cusack is my obsession. Although, there's little possibility in John doing TV. He's never done it, has he? I've been hearing of him appearing on Scrubs since Season 3 as he is cozy and buddies with John C. McGinley (Dr. Cox) but it has never happened. Jennifer, on the other hand...Scrubs and the Felicity cast? Some connection. They had Scott Foley before (playing Elliot's boyfriend), Keri Russell (playing Elliot

WASHINGTON — The Interior Department declared the polar bear a threatened species Wednesday because of the loss of Arctic sea ice but also cautioned the decision should not be viewed as a path to address global warming. Interior Secretary Dirk Kempthorne cited dramatic declines in sea ice over the last three decades and projections of continued losses, meaning, he said, that the polar bear is a species likely to be in danger of extinction in the near future. But Kempthorne said it would be "w

Tampa's Controversial Plan to Allow Non-Profit Firm Solve Water Problems

Wed, 14 May 2008 15:51:16 PDT
Each day, the city of Tampa, FL dumps 55 million gallons of treated sewer water into Tampa Bay (pictured), not making the EPA very happy. Besides reducing pollutants in Tampa Bay, the water could be used for non-drinking purposes, like watering lawns, and ease the growing demand for potable water. Under continued pressure from the EPA, and with ten years of searching for a solution, a non-profit firm, Water Partners Inc., has proposed to put this reclaimed water to use, and sell it to potent

Governor Chet Culver's staff sent out an advisory early this afternoon saying the governor would hold a 4 p.m. news cofnerence today "to discuss outstanding legislation." It meant Culver had made a decision on legislation which would expand the bargaining rights of government workers in Iowa who are members of a union like AFSCME or ISEA. At 3:30, when someone sent me a text message asking if Culver would sign or veto the bill, I sent this reply: "Depends if he calls heads or tails on the co
