WASHINGTON — The Interior Department declared the polar bear a threatened species Wednesday because of the loss of Arctic sea ice but also cautioned the decision should not be viewed as a path to address global warming. Yesterday brought sad news, as Lincoln Karim told me that at least one, but probably all three, of the Riverside Park baby red-tailed hawks had died, possibly from poisoned prey. Necropsy results are pending.

Governor Chet Culver's staff sent out an advisory early this afternoon saying the governor would hold a 4 p.m. news cofnerence today "to discuss outstanding legislation." It meant Culver had made a decision on legislation which would expand the bargaining rights of government workers in Iowa who are members of a union like AFSCME or ISEA.
